Protesting against private medical college unethical - Minister S.B. Dissanayake

http://www.lankanewstoday.com/wp-content/uploads/cache/6102_NewsSP.jpgHigher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake said Sri Lanka has many private tertiary education institutions offering degree certificates and therefore it is not ethical for the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) or any other party to protest against the setting up of private medical colleges which will help the country produce more doctors in future.
According to Higher Education Ministry reports, over seven tertiary education institutions operate in the country at present, offering degree certificates on various educational fields.
The Minister also referred to the protest carried out by the GMOA last week against the decision taken by the Higher Education Ministry to legalise the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) at Malabe. He said only those who missed entry to Sri Lankan Medical Colleges by a few marks seek enrolment in this private medical college.
He said the SAITM was established in 2008 and the University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved it after monitoring its education facilities for over two years.
It is reported that the SAITM is affiliated to the University of Wolverhampton, University of Buckingham, Asian Institute of Technology and Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy and the quality and standard of the medical degrees awarded come under the purview of the UGC and the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC).
Meanwhile, a senior official of the SAITM said the private medical college has many facilities including lecture halls, auditoriums, tutorial rooms, laboratories and museums for anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, parasitology and pathology, while others are being constructed.
It is also reported that the GMOA's planned strike last Wednesday was called off after certain demands were made to the SAITM.
The SAITM also turned down the request made by the Health Ministry and the GMOA to suspend enrolling students to the institution.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Maithreepala Sirisena at a recent function at the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital said education and other facilities at private medical colleges should be of a high standard and it is their duty to produce qualified doctors to cater to the needs of patients.

Marine drive to be extended to Panadura

http://www.janadhipathi.com/images/articles/admin/june2011/colombo-galle-road.jpgThe newly constructed marine drive from Kollupitiya junction to Wellawatte will be extended to Panadura from January next year.
According to the Ministry of Highways, construction work on the first phase between Wellawatte and Moratuwa will be completed soon to ease the heavy traffic congestion.
At present motorists take over 70 minutes to reach either destination.
Deputy Ports and Highways Minister Nirmala Kotalawala told the Sunday Observer that a marine drive from Wellawatte to Moratuwa is urgently needed and the road design process which is now being carried out will be completed before December.
After the first phase is completed motorists could access the new Galle Road from Moratuwa. At present it takes only five to six minutes to reach Panadura from Moratuwa on the new Galle Road which runs parallel to the Southern railway track.
Deputy Minister Kotalawala said that hoteliers, residents and land owners, living along the coastal belt from Wellawatte to Moratuwa have been warned to refrain from building new constructions.
The Minister said the road and other needs of the marine drive from Wellawatte to Kollupitiya are being regularly monitored, since all vehicles on the Galle Road from the South enter the city of Colombo from Dickman's Road.
Motorists could now drive to Kollupitiya from Dickman's Road junction within a few minutes due to the uniflow system, introduced by the City Police a few months ago.

Singapoor Maid takes sexy photos on employer's bed

After reading the recent horror story about a maid who put menstrual blood in her employers' soup, one employer did a spot check on her maid's Facebook page.

She was shocked when she saw a photo of her Filipino maid posing suggestively on the bed in the master bedroom.

The employer deduced that the photo was taken by another person, which meant that her maid was allowing strangers into the house while everyone was at work.

The concerned employer sent the photos to citizen journalism website Stomp to warn other employers to be vigilant about their maid's activities.

She added that she had only employed this maid for two months after she was transferred from another employer.

She has already sent the maid back to the employment agency.

She said: "I also have a kid in her care and it's unnerving to know these things are happening in my own house... Employers beware. She might be transferred to you next."

Earlier this year, there was a similar incident where a domestic helper wore her employer's clothes and posted the photos online.

Jobless man in Singapoor jailed for entering female toilet, peeping at student

Foo Sai Teck, 38, pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal trespass at the female toilet of CPA House at Aljunied Road and to peeping at a 17-year-old student through a gap between the door and the floor of a cubicle last month.

A Community Court heard that on Aug 3, he went to a female toilet on the fifth level of the building and stayed in the last cubicle.

Later, a 22-year-old student walked in and saw him kneeling with his head bent towards the floor and looking into a cubicle.

A week later, Foo repeated the offence by entering another women's toilet and peeping at a 17-year-old student.

Foo has convictions for criminal trespass, molestation and insulting modesty.

He could have been jailed for up to a year and/or fined for insulting modesty. For trespass, the maximum punishment is three months' jail and a $1,500 fine.

Facebook Accused of Publishing Partner’s Passwords

113910-facebook-founder-and-ceo-mark-zuckerberg.jpgAnother person is currently claiming a stake in Zuckerberg's Facebook fortune: someone named Paul Ceglia recently claimed that the social “not-working behemoth” had used some underhand tactics in the company’s legal defense.

Paul Ceglia said that he used to have a contract that would have undoubtedly made him a Facebook partner eight years ago. Ceglia is now claiming that the social network’s hired hands from Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP for some reason included his personal passwords in court papers.

According to his accusations, his private e-mail addresses and passwords were extracted from the public federal court filing. Then, he claims, they were later removed. Meanwhile, Bloomberg believes that Paul Ceglia's attorneys were outraged and for some reason took a decision to use the alleged privacy violations for leverage in court. The court papers reveal that they are claiming that counsel’s baffling misconduct caused the situation where Ceglia’s e-mail accounts were accessible to the open public for a few hours. Currently they are looking for both court sanctions and attorney fees.

In respond, the most popular social network in the world denied that an individual named Paul Ceglia had any rights to its vast, vast coffers. All they were able to disclose was that Zuckerberg had agreed to work with something under the name “StreetFax” – a start-up. However, Facebook wasn’t referenced anywhere. In its turn, the corporation claimed that Paul Ceglia was engaging in fraud and therefore wasn’t entitled to any money.

Regardless of whether or not Paul Ceglia had any right to Zuckerberg's Facebook, everyone understands that he chose to target a company with very, very deep pockets. The latter, in the meantime, is a company that doesn’t wear its heart on its sleeve. If you have seen The Social Network or just learnt something about the most amazing network in the world, connecting friends and relatives in some cases tighter than any other means of communication, you would know that Facebook’s history was all over the lawsuits with claims that someone’s taken part in developing Facebook’s idea.

With the case continuing, we’ll whether this person is simply trying to turn a buck, or whether the social network is more worried than it’s letting on.

Yahoo Fired Its CEO

yahoo_logo.jpgYahoo is reported to fire its CEO Carol Bartz by phone. If some of you remember, she was hired with great fanfare, and the move was targeted at saving the search giant from obscurity. Nevertheless, she didn’t do a lot, except making a deal with Microsoft.

Yahoo has recently released a statement, saying that Bartz had been “removed” from her position. The post will be taken by Timothy Morse, chief financial officer, for now. Yahoo will then be looking for someone else.

According to media reports, Carol Bartz sent a goodbye letter to employees from her tablet, saying that she was very sad to tell everyone she had been fired over the phone by the company’s chairman of the board. Carol expressed her pleasure to work at the company and wished everyone the best.

Meanwhile, Yahoo has consistently lost ground on advertising within the past years. For example, even Facebook seems to overtake Yahoo in 2011 and collect the biggest slice of Internet display advertising dollars in the United States.

Carol Bartz was hired by Yahoo 2 years ago to replace its co-founder Jerry Yang, who also failed to turn the search engine around. When she joined the company, Yahoo’s shares were trading for around $12. However, when Wall Street heard of her exit, the shares jumped more than 6% in after-hours trade to $13.72. Later Wall Street lost interest in Carol Bartz, because she didn’t do that much. Moreover, she mishandled the Yahoo’s strained relationship with Chinese Alibaba Group, which had handed Alipay to the search engine. Alipay was controlled by Alibaba founder Jack Ma, most likely without the search giant’s knowledge. Meanwhile, Alibaba was claiming that the company was fully aware of the transaction.

Just in the beginning of this past summer, Yahoo chairman Roy Bostock for some reason gave his public support to Carol Bartz at Yahoo’s annual general meeting. This seems strange when compared with the decision to fire her by phone just three months later.

One of the interesting facts of Carol Bartz’s career is that she once went as far as to tell Michael Arrington, the owner of the Techcrunch service to “f*** off” during an interview at some industry event. By a coincidence, Michael Arrington quit his company at the same time that Bartz was fired. In other words, it seems that they were both “f***ed off” at the same time. Yahoo's senior executive, who later worked for AMD, claimed that the company’s building in Satan Clara has bad feng shui. It seems that Carol Bartz will now agree with him.

Sri Lanka to woo 2.5 million tourists by 2016

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpUI8oZI3RC2x6GTrvkpiURX0rJNB5CNt_eXPBTXSkHOS7vUUkzJ6jezrlJ_uOBRsdw1nAnxJNqs0le0TLwSZ2qvRY9OnJ_imSwq8Fb7f8mokG98692ZBr4-Ka2PORVqeThdEypDuvI3s/s1600/Tourist_Arrivals_Sri_Lanka.jpgSri Lanka on Monday set an ambitious target of attracting 2.5 million foreign holiday-makers in the next five years, as the island nation emerges from decades of war.

“We had 650,000 tourists last year, but this year we crossed the 500,000 mark in the first eight months alone,” tourism chief Nalaka Godahewa said. “We have set a target of attracting 2.5 million tourists by 2016.”

Sri Lanka Tourism, the main regulatory authority for the tourism sector, said it will streamline approvals and seek greater investments in hotels to double room capacity to 45,000 by 2016.

Godahewa said he expected arrivals to rise more rapidly with the increase in hotel rooms. Sri Lanka hopes to increase its tourism earnings to $2.75 billion by 2016, he added.

The government is also expecting a boom in domestic aviation to meet the increasing tourism demand.

The island banned domestic flying during the height of fighting between troops and Tamil Tiger rebels.

The guerrillas had used light aircraft to bomb military as well as civilian targets before they were crushed in an onslaught by security forces in May 2009.

The fighting seriously hurt the leisure sector with many hotels closing down.

However, hotel rates have more than doubled since the end of the separatist conflict and tourism is seen as a key sector contributing to an average eight percent annual economic growth since the end of the fighting.

Sri Lanka wants to push its beaches, tea-growing mountains, heritage sites and wildlife parks to woo high-spending foreign holiday-makers, AFP reports.

Lankans stealing abandoned cars in Dubai

http://chatter-fest.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/hijacking.jpgSix men — four Sri Lankans and two Syrians — have been accused of forming a gang that specialised in stealing cars that had been abandoned by their owners on the streets of Dubai for months.

Prosecutors said the six men would search for deserted cars that had Dubai Municipality warning notices on their windshields.

Then they would wash the cars before breaking the locks open, cutting new keys and driving off, reported Gulf News.

When the defendants appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance yesterday, they pleaded not guilty.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the suspects, aged between 23 and 46, stole a victim’s Toyota Previa car from the Al Qusais Area.

Prosecutors said the Sri Lankan defendants washed the car and waited for the Syrian suspects to break the lock and cut a new key. Then they gave the new key to one of the Sri Lankan suspects, 35-year-old N.H., who stole the car.

An Emirati police major told prosecutors that three of the Sri Lankan suspects had been arrested.

“They confessed that they worked for N.H. Police seized large amounts of liquor bottles hidden in the stolen Toyota,” he said.

The major told prosecutors that the three had confessed that N.H. would search for deserted cars with notices from Dubai Municipality on their windshields. The notices informed the car’s owners that the cars would be confiscated if they were not moved.

“Then they would clean the cars and wait for the Syrian suspects to open the cars and copy new keys. During questioning, the suspects confessed that they had [stolen] ten cars,” the major said.

According to records, one of the Syrian suspects would collect Dh800 for supplying new keys.

Media revealed recently that an alleged air force deserter, two examination officers had sexually molested a 10-year-old school girl at Thelijjawila, Matara while the victim had visited the school with her mother for cleaning duties.

The examination officers had reportedly been consuming liquor at the time while engaging in G.C.E. A/L examination related duties.

Answering a question by UNP Parliamentarian Buddhika Pathirana, the Minister pointed out that the President dished out instructoions regarding action to be taken against the examination officers on a ministerial level and legal measures to be taken through court.

Car lock – do it from the door control!!

 http://www.carlock.ie/images/pic-1.jpg
How to Lock Your Car and Why ?

I locked my car. As I walked away I heard my car door unlock. I went back and locked my car again three times .. Each time, as soon as I started to walk away, I would hear it unlock again!! Naturally alarmed, I looked around and there were two guys sitting in a car in the fire lane next to the store. They were obviously watching me intently, and there was no doubt they were somehow involved in this very weird situation. I quickly chucked the errand I was on, jumped in my car and sped away. I went straight to the police station, told them what had happened, and found out I was part of a new, and very successful, scheme being used to gain entry into cars. Two weeks later, my friend’s son had a similar happening….

While traveling, my friend’s son stopped at a roadside rest to use the bathroom. When he came out to his car less than 4-5 minutes later, someone had gotten into his car and stolen his cell phone, laptop computer, GPS navigator, briefcase……you name it. He called the police and since there were no signs of his car being broken into, the police told him he had been a victim of the latest robbery tactic — there is a device that robbers are using now to clone your security code when you lock your doors on your car using your key-chain locking device..
They sit a distance away and watch for their next victim. They know you are going inside of the store, restaurant, or bathroom and that they now have a few minutes to steal and run. The police officer said to manually lock your car door-by hitting the lock button inside the car — that way if there is someone sitting in a parking lot watching for their next victim, it will not be you.
When you hit the lock button on your car upon exiting, it does not send the security code, but if you walk away and use the door lock on your key chain, it sends the code through the airwaves where it can be instantly stolen. This is very real.
Be wisely aware of what you just read and please pass this note on. Look how many times we all lock our doors with our remote just to be sure we remembered to lock them — and bingo, someone has our code…and whatever was in our car.
Snopes Approved –Please share with everyone you know!!
Note: The receiving device is known as a “Spectrum Analyzer” and the signal can be recorded and played back to unlock the car door. True!

10 Things Some People Don't Know About Albert Einstein

  http://www.fransmensonides.nl/foto/einstein.jpg

10. Loved to Sail
When Einstein attended college at the Polytechnic Institute in Zurich, Switzerland, he fell in love with sailing. He would often take a boat out onto a lake, pull out a notebook, relax, and think. Even though Einstein never learned to swim, he kept sailing as a hobby throughout his life.

9. Einstein's Brain
When Einstein died in 1955, his body was cremated and his ashes scattered, as was his wish. However, before his body was cremated, pathologist Thomas Harvey at Princeton Hospital conducted an autopsy in which he removed Einstein's brain. Rather than putting the brain back in the body, Harvey decided to keep it, ostensibly for study. Harvey did not have permission to keep Einstein's brain, but days later, he convinced Einstein's son that it would help science. Shortly thereafter, Harvey was fired from his position at Princeton because he refused to give up Einstein's brain.
For the next four decades, Harvey kept Einstein's chopped-up brain (Harvey had it cut into over 200 pieces) in two mason jars with him as he moved around the country. Every once in a while, Harvey would slice off a piece and send it to a researcher. Finally, in 1998, Harvey returned Einstein's brain to the pathologist at Princeton Hospital.

8. Einstein and the Violin
Einstein's mother, Pauline, was an accomplished pianist and wanted her son to love music too, so she started him on violin lessons when he was six years old. Unfortunately, at first, Einstein hated playing the violin. He would much rather build houses of cards, which he was really good at (he once built one 14 stories high!), or do just about anything else. When Einstein was 13-years old, he suddenly changed his mind about the violin when he heard the music of Mozart. With a new passion for playing, Einstein continued to play the violin until the last few years of his life. For nearly seven decades, Einstein would not only use the violin to relax when he became stuck in his thinking process, he would play socially at local recitals or join in impromptu groups such as Christmas carolers who stopped at his home.

7. Presidency of Israel
A few days after Zionist leader and first President of Israel Chaim Weizmann died on November 9, 1952, Einstein was asked if he would accept the position of being the second president of Israel. Einstein, age 73, declined the offer. In his official letter of refusal, Einstein stated that he not only lacked the "natural aptitude and the experience to deal properly with people," but also, he was getting old.

6. No Socks
Part of Einstein's charm was his disheveled look. In addition to his uncombed hair, one of Einstein's peculiar habits was to never wear socks. Whether it was while out sailing or to a formal dinner at the White House, Einstein went without socks everywhere. To Einstein, socks were a pain because they often would get holes in them. Plus, why wear both socks and shoes when one of them would do just fine?

5. A Simple Compass
When Albert Einstein was five years old and sick in bed, his father showed him a simple pocket compass. Einstein was mesmerized. What force exerted itself on the little needle to make it point in a single direction? This question haunted Einstein for many years and has been noted as the beginning of his fascination with science.

4. Designed a Refrigerator
Twenty-one years after writing his Special Theory of Relativity, Albert Einstein invented a refrigerator that operated on alcohol gas. The refrigerator was patented in 1926 but never went into production because new technology made it unnecessary. Einstein invented the refrigerator because he read about a family that was poisoned by a sulphur dioxide-emitting refrigerator.

3. Obsessed Smoker
Einstein loved to smoke. As he walked between his house and his office at Princeton, one could often see him followed by a trail of smoke. Nearly as part of his image as his wild hair and baggy clothes was Einstein clutching his trusty briar pipe. In 1950, Einstein is noted as saying, "I believe that pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgment in all human affairs," Although he favored pipes, Einstein was not one to turn down a cigar or even a cigarette.

2. Married His Cousin
After Einstein divorced his first wife, Mileva Maric, in 1919, he married his cousin, Elsa Loewenthal (nee Einstein). How closely were they related? Quite close. Elsa was actually related to Albert on both sides of his family. Albert's mother and Elsa's mother were sisters, plus Albert's father and Elsa's father were cousins. When they were both little, Elsa and Albert had played together; however, their romance only began once Elsa had married and divorced Max Loewenthal.

1. An Illegitimate Daughter
In 1901, before Albert Einstein and Mileva Maric were married, the college sweethearts took a romantic getaway to Lake Como in Italy. After the vacation, Mileva found herself pregnant. In that day and age, illegitimate children were not uncommon and yet they were also not accepted by society. Since Einstein did not have the money to marry Maric nor the ability to support a child, the two were not able to get married until Einstein got the patent job over a year later. So as not to besmirch Einstein's reputation, Maric went back to her family and had the baby girl, whom she named Lieserl.
Although we know that Einstein knew about his daughter, we don't actually know what happened to her. There are but just a few references of her in Einstein's letters, with the last one in September 1903. It is believed that Lieserl either died after suffering from scarlet fever at an early age or she survived the scarlet fever and was given up for adoption. Both Albert and Mileva kept the existence of Lieserl so secret that Einstein scholars only discovered her existence in recent years.
